Mac screen recorders, compared

The best screen recorder for Mac depends on what you make.

We make Framecast, so we’re biased. We tried to be fair: every price below was checked on the maker’s own website in October 2026.

There’s no single best Mac screen recorder. A product demo, a quick bug clip and a two-hour course need different tools. So instead of a ranked list, here are seven good Mac screen recorders, grouped by what each does best.

How we compared

We read each maker’s own website and pricing page, and looked at six things:

  • Price model: pay once, subscription or free.
  • Auto zoom: does it zoom in where you click, without you placing each zoom?
  • Cursor polish: can you smooth or resize the pointer after you record?
  • Captions: can it write captions from your voice?
  • Sharing: can you send a link, or only a file?
  • Mac-native: is it built for the Mac, or for several systems?

We didn’t make up scores. Where a maker doesn’t say something, we say so.

Polished product demos and tutorials (auto zoom)

These three apps record your screen, then do the editing for you: they zoom in where you click, smooth the cursor and add a background.

Framecast

This is our app, so weigh this part accordingly. Framecast zooms in on your clicks and typing, smooths your cursor, frames your camera and blurs private info like API keys. It writes captions on your Mac. One recording can also become a step-by-step guide, a click-through demo, a vertical video or a GIF. Share links come with comments and passwords. The downsides: it’s Mac only, needs macOS 14 or later, and exporting needs a license.

Price$79 $39 once for 3 Macs, with lifetime updates. Or $15 a month.
PlatformsMac only, macOS 14 Sonoma or later
Auto zoomYes, on clicks and typing

Best forProduct demos, tutorials and help-center videos, especially when you also need a written guide

Screen Studio

Screen Studio is a polished Mac app made for this kind of video. It zooms in where you clicked, with two zoom styles, and redraws the cursor so you can smooth and resize it. It records your Mac’s sound and transcribes captions on your Mac. It’s the closest match to Framecast; the biggest difference is how you pay. Our Screen Studio alternative page compares the two. Full comparison: Framecast vs Screen Studio.

Price$29 a month, or $9 a month billed yearly ($108 a year), as listed on screen.studio in October 2026. One-time licenses are no longer sold to new buyers.
PlatformsMac only, macOS 13.1 or later recommended

Best forThis style of video if you don’t mind a subscription, or you’re on macOS 13

Screen Charm

Screen Charm is a Mac app for product demos, tutorials and courses. It records your screen, webcam, microphone and system audio, then adds a zoom on every click, cursor effects, backgrounds and captions. Export an MP4 up to 4K or make a share link. Like Framecast, you pay once and get updates for life.

Free and open source

Cap

Cap is open source, with its code on GitHub. Studio Mode records in 4K to your computer, then opens an editor with backgrounds, automatic zoom from your clicks, cursor effects and captions made on your machine. Instant Mode uploads as you record and copies a link when you stop. One catch: the free version is for personal use only.

PriceFree for personal use, with share links up to 5 minutes. Commercial use needs a Desktop License, $58 once or $29 a year. Cap Pro is $12 per user a month, or $8.16 a month billed annually, as listed on cap.so in October 2026.

CleanShot X

CleanShot X is a screenshot tool first. It also records your screen with a webcam bubble, key presses, and voice and system audio, as an MP4 or a GIF. Its editor can add smooth zooms for you, and any capture can become a link. For a long, narrated demo, an editor-first app gives you more.

Price$35 once with one year of updates (optional renewal, $19 a year), or Pro at $10 per user a month billed annually, as listed on cleanshot.com in October 2026. See cleanshot.com for month-to-month pricing. Also in Setapp.

Camtasia

Camtasia, from TechSmith, is a full video editor with a screen recorder built in. It records screen, microphone, system audio and webcam on separate tracks, then gives you a multitrack timeline with animations, callouts, quizzes and editing by transcript. SmartFocus adds zooms and pans from your clicks and cursor movement. There’s more to learn, and you pay every year.

PriceEssentials, the first plan with no watermark on editor exports, is $179.88 a year. Starter is $39 a year, but its editor exports are watermarked. Create is $249 and Pro $599 a year. All billed yearly, as listed on techsmith.com in October 2026.

Every Mac can already record its screen. Press Shift-Command-5 to open the Screenshot toolbar, choose the whole screen or a selected portion, and click Record. On macOS Tahoe 26 or later you can record a single window, and QuickTime Player makes the same kind of recording. You get a plain video, with your microphone if you pick one. Show Mouse Clicks circles each click, and on macOS 27 Golden Gate or later, Include System Audio adds your Mac’s sound. There’s no zooming, cursor smoothing or captions. Questions

Is there a Screen Studio alternative you pay for once?

Yes, a few. Framecast is $79 $39 once for 3 Macs, with lifetime updates. Screen Charm is $99 once with free lifetime updates, as listed on screencharm.com in October 2026. Cap sells a Desktop License for $58 once, as listed on cap.so in October 2026.

Screen Studio says one-time licenses are no longer available for new purchases, as listed on screen.studio in October 2026. See our Screen Studio alternative page, or what a Mac screen recorder with no subscription includes.

What’s the best free screen recorder for Mac?

For a plain recording, the built-in Screenshot toolbar: press Shift-Command-5. For auto zoom and an editor at no cost, Cap is free for personal use, as listed on cap.so in October 2026. Commercial use needs a paid license.

Camtasia’s editor is free to download, but exports have a watermark until you buy Essentials or a higher plan, as listed on techsmith.com in October 2026. Framecast is free to try with every feature and no time limit; exporting needs a license.

Which Mac screen recorder records system audio?

All seven can, with one catch for the built-in tool. Framecast records system audio from every app or only the apps you pick. Screen Studio, Screen Charm, Cap, CleanShot X and Camtasia each say on their own websites that they record your Mac’s sound.

Apple’s Screenshot toolbar has Include System Audio in macOS 27 Golden Gate or later; earlier versions record only your microphone. See how to screen record on Mac with audio.

Do I need a subscription?

No. Framecast, Screen Charm, Cap and CleanShot X all sell one-time licenses. Screen Studio and Camtasia’s individual plans are subscriptions.

A subscription can suit a single project: Framecast Monthly is $15 a month, and you can cancel any time. If you record often, paying once costs less over a few years. Students and teachers get 40% off Framecast: ask us.

Do any of these work on Windows?

Two do: Cap runs on Mac, Windows and Linux, and Camtasia on Mac and Windows. Framecast, Screen Studio, Screen Charm and CleanShot X are Mac only, like the built-in toolbar.
